632. Rocks – Aerosmith

Brief Background: Rocks is the fourth album from Aerosmith. It was mostly recorded in their practice space through a mobile studio in February and March of 1976 and was released in May of the same year.

What I think: As I mentioned in my Toys in the Attic write-up, I went through a significant Aerosmith phase in my early teens. In that phase, this album never did anything for me. That sentiment is upheld during this listen. My overall thought of the album is that they sure know how to make a three and a half/four minute song seem like it’s eight minutes long. It seems like almost every track has an unnecessary instrumental jam/outro that just drags the music out. With the album being only 35 minutes long, it makes me wondering if they were using it as filler. Another thing is that the mix is really weird on some of the tracks. On”Rats in the Cellar” and “Combination” everything (even the vocals) seem to be at the same level which makes it all blur together in a bad wall of sound way. I just don’t like much here, the best are “Last Child” and “Home Tonight”, but I wouldn’t dig the album out to hear them.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I’d be willing to skip this one… we had one Aersomith album and that is enough.
