My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Back to Mystery City is the fourth album by Finnish rock band Hanoi Rocks. The album was recorded during the beginning of 1983 and released in May of the same year.
What I think: So I hear the name Hanoi Rocks and I group them in with all of the L.A. hair metal that I so thoroughly despise even though I knew they weren’t from there (I thought they were from London and not Finland). At least with this album, I was so wrong. These songs owe as much to power pop and punk than they do to glam metal. I love how goddamn catchy the whole thing is. “Sailing Down the Tears” sounds like if it was less produced it would have fit well on The Clash’s second album. “Beating Gets Faster” and “Ice Cream Summer” both sound like they were written by Big Star fans. You still have some “harder” stuff with “Malibu Beach Nightmare” and “Mental Beat”, but it’s actually a nice counter to much of the poppier material.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I agree that this should be here. It’s such a surprise and I’m so glad I learned of it. That is what this project is for.
