My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Soul Mining is debut album by British synthpop band The The. The album was recorded in 1982 and 1983 and released in October of the latter. Many different versions of the album have been released over the years.
What I think: This album is sort of what I fear when doing this project. It’s not that it is bad, it just sort of doesn’t make much of an impression on me. It has an interesting dark/gothic synthpop thing going on that should grab me. It’s really literary and reminds me of a poppier version of The National. Still, the only parts to really get me listening closely are two extended instrumental parts. The first being the piano outro by Jools Holland on “Uncertain Smile”, which is really fun and another outro on “Giant” which has a catchy as hell world music drum part and vocal chant going on. Other than that it’s just sort of… there.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I would say this is an album that needs more listens to be analyzed. I will give it a pass and agree that it should be here.
