My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Pelican West is the debut album by UK band Haircut 100. The album was recorded in 1981 and early 1982 being released in February of the latter. This would be one of only two albums the group would release. The second being put out in 1984 after the departure of lead singer Nick Heyward.
What I think: Like every other sane and reasonable person in this world, I absolutely adore “Love Plus One” and was hoping for more music in that vein and while there are a couple of songs that come close (“Snow Girl” and “Surprise Me Again”), the album is just a little too full of horns, big bass lines and Talking Heads style guitar. Those aren’t usually bad at all, but I just couldn’t get into it. I think my love of “Love Plus One” just makes me want to hear songs like that through the whole album.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I’ve given it a couple chances now, but I still feel like this deserves another from me, it has its moments. At this point though I have to pass.
