My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: The Nightfly is the first solo album from Steely Dan co-anchor Donald Fagen. The album was recorded throughout 81-82 being released in October of 82. The album was one of the first to be recorded digitally and is still considered a benchmark for audiophiles.
What I think: First listening to this album I thought, “This sounds like what I would expect, an early 80’s version of Steely Dan.” At that point, it was kind of fun, because it is so seated in that sound. After a couple of songs, I really tired of that period piece experience and was ready to move on.
I can see this being an important and exciting album for someone who was connected to it at the time of its release, that is not the case for me and it just ends up being a snooze and cheese-fest.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Not my style, I’ll give it a pass.
