1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

506. Damage – Black Flag

Brief Background: Damaged is the first full album by Black Flag. It was recorded just weeks after Henry Rollins joined the band during August of 1981. The album was released in December of that year.

What I think: Maybe I’m just in “cranky old man” mode recently, but I can’t do this album. It’s just so negative, really aside from “Rise Above”  and “Tv Party” everything is depression and self-hate. I mean what made these suburban males become so full of hate and anger that there is never a chance of anything ever getting better. I’ve read Rollins’ Get in the Van and I know the suffering and isolation he imposed on himself, I know much less about Ginn (he wrote most of the lyrics), but for most, even in their darkest times there is some hope… some light somewhere. The fact that there is none here really makes me dislike this album, an album which is at the top of most lists for best Punk albums. Sorry folks I just can’t do it. Use that anger to pull people together… write another Unity song. Don’t just keep building it into more hate, anger and violence.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Get off my yard!
