My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Original Album is tracks 1-9
Brief Background: Architecture and Morality is the third album by UK pop group OMD. The album was recorded through 1980 and 1981 and released in November of 1981. The album was a huge hit in Europe selling over eight million copies.
What I think: My god I love this band. They could sing over barking dogs and I would likely still enjoy it. There is just something about those two voices that have given me comfort throughout my whole life. So, it goes without saying that this album is no different… although it can be darker sounding in places than some of their others, like on “Sealand” and “The New Stone Age”. It’s almost like they took in some influence from the Cure.
The rest of the album is what you would expect from them, flowing sythns with a hint of pop to them and vocals that hook you in and make you believe you can save the world. “Souvenir” is my favorite song here, and is probably my second favorite OMD song (I wish I could say I like it more than “If You Leave”, but that one has been with me my whole life and is a top-five all-time song) That keyboard with those vocals… man o’ man. “She’s Leaving” is a lovely all-out pop song. With “The Beginning and the End” rounding out the album perfectly.
Bonus points: The album cover is perfect, it looks like a 1981 textbook on Architecture and Morality… Completely dry and boring.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It tickles that spot at the base of my skull, for me it doesn’t get any better.
