1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

522. Sound Affects – The Jam

Brief Background: Sound Affects is the fifth album by British back The Jam. THe album was recorded during the middle of 1980 being released in November of the same year.

What I think: I really felt that All Mod Cons was too much of a sweet sound, without enough grit. I compared it to listening to half of a Clash recording. While I don’t know if Sound Affects is any more gritty, it certainly sounds much more full an complete. I really like the big Post-Punk bass and drum sound in the mix, which does a lot to counter that huge Beatles influence. There is of course nothing wrong with The Beatles influence, The Jam just seems to lean on it a bit too much at times.

My favorite songs here are “Pretty Green”, “Monday”, “Start!” (a direct ripoff of “Taxman”) and “Music for the last Couple”.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to?  I do agree that this should be here, it could have easily just replaced All Mod Cons in the list.
