My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Hypnotised is the second album by the Irish Punk band The Undertones. It was recorded over the end of ’79 and beginning of ’80. It was released in April of 1980.
What I think: After listening to and absolutely loving their first album about three months ago, I quickly listened to this one soon after. I was disappointed out of the gate and I didn’t even make it all the way through. I think I quit after their lackluster cover of “Under the Boardwalk” (I have nothing against a cover, this one just grates on me though). The first six songs start with two that are trying to be humorous and that cover. I just couldn’t handle it.
So, I revisited it again for this project and realize that giving up on it was a mistake. The first songs are lacking (although “Hypnotised” and “See That Girl” are pretty good), but the band really hits its stride after that “Under the Boardwalk” and even the later attempt at humor (“My Perfect Cousin”) comes off as more enjoyable. The rest isn’t as strong as the first album, but it’s pretty damn good.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s inconsistent, but good. It’s a borderline album for this project. I would probably skip it.
