My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Iron Maiden is the debut album by the English band of the same name. It was recorded in January of 1980 and released in April of the same year.
What I think: I have to admit I’m generally enjoying this 1980’s Metal much better than the 70’s stuff. It just doesn’t sound so burnt out and that is due in large part to the energy of music. Iron Maiden is really no different in that respect and while I wouldn’t listen to it again there are some cool spots. The first song “Prowler” has a really great Punk Rock bass vibe that really excited me about the album as a whole. That sound didn’t persist, but bassist Steve Harris’ playing is generally amazing throughout. “Phanthom of the Opera” is a great epic Metal song. “Strange Word” is that weird sort of Thrash ballad, that Metallica later perfected and “Iron Maiden” is just a nice tight Heavy Metal song(on an album titled Iron Maiden by a band called Iron Maiden). So overall, it was a fun listen, but ultimately not something I’m completely into.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Yea, I’m glad it was here and I think it deserves to be here.
