1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

527. Group Sex – Circle Jerks

Brief Background: Group Sex is the debut album by L.A. Hardcore Punk Band the Circle Jerks. The album has 14 songs and lasts just 15 minutes. It was recorded and released in 1980.

What I think: Looking at the beginning of L.A. Hardcore, you see a movement that changed the original inclusive punk scene into a violent, male dominated and mostly Suburban group that really tore apart what had existed before. While it became a troubling scene, I don’t think you can discount it because of that. While bored Suburban kids is certainly an eighties cliche, it affected millions of people throughout the country who felt lost and angry. This gave them an outlet for that. It wasn’t always healthy, but I bet for many it was more healthy than whatever the alternative would have been.

So, you are left with this music, it’s fast, no nonsense and states just what needed to be stated before getting out. It doesn’t have a lot of melody, but that doesn’t make it not catchy. It really starts right around the time this album was released and would set the pace for for punk in the 80’s. It is Hardcore and the highlights here are “Deny Everything”, “Live Fast Die Young” and “Red Tape”. Have fifteen minutes to spare? Give it a listen.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I agree it should be here, this scene and this music is a conflicted one, but it is important and influenced so much after it.
