My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Machine Gun Etiquette the third album by English punk band The Damned. The album was recorded in the Spring and Summer of 1979 and released in November of the same year.
What I think: It’s funny how with as many albums I’ve blogged about, I thought I had done their debut album Damned Damned Damned. It turns out, I’ve just listened to it on my own… what a novel idea. Song to song, I like Damned Damned Damned better, but the lo-fi sound and the sameness can get tiring. This album isn’t as good throughout, but has better peaks and more variety. Songs like “Melody Lee” and “Plan 9 Channel 7” have a definite catchiness to them while still keeping a Punk edge. The highlight of the album though, is without a doubt the final song “Smash it Up Parts 1 & 2”, part one is a really cool, slow instrumental piece that really reminds me of some of the “Good” Emo that came out of the late nineties and early 2000’s. Part 2 is just a really catchy punk song that really ends the album nicely.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s good, but not great. I would probably be ok with skipping this one.
