1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

546. Entertainment! – Gang of Four

Brief Background: Entertainment! is the debut album by UK band Gang of Four. The album was recorded in 1979 and released in September of that year.

What I think: Here is another album that I inexplicably have never listened to before. The music is what initially grabs on to me, with it’s big bass sound and jittery guitars that always find a way in to dominate short sections of the songs. The lyrics as a whole on the album are dense and will take repeated listens to process, but as a whole bring some huge energy.

The initial song “Ether” is a really good representation of the whole album and has call and response lyrics that really remind me of what Bloc Party did on Silent Alarm, and you can just hear this album’s influence all over that.  The songs sort of proceed in a similar vein of kicking ass the whole way through with the aforementioned “Ether”, “Not Great Men” and “At Home He’s a Tourist” being favorites on the album.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Another one I’m grateful to finally listen to. The music hits instantly, the lyrics will instill themselves with repeated listens.
