My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Reggatta de Blanc is the second album by UK band The Police. It was recorded during the first half of 1979 and was released in October of the same year. The title is a “fake” French translation of White Reggae.
What I think: I was a fairly big The Police fan in high school and college, but wore out on them after a time. I’ve made attempts to get back into them, but nothing has stuck. I’m mildy bummed that their debut Outlandos d’Amour didn’t make the book as it is my favorite album from them. I love the pop-punk energy that runs throughout. I would go as far as to say “So Lonely” is one of my all time top ten favorite songs.
So with that we come to this album, which is no slouch, but is certainly more calculated and diverse. Often that would be a good thing, but that takes away the spontaneous feeling I get from the debut. I also would complain that the “White Reggae” gets to be too much at times. I think it’s great on “Bring on the Night”, but makes me cringe on “Bed’s too Big Without You”. I also feel the Reggae really brings Sting’s bass too much to the foreground, which buries the guitar (and again some of the energy).
Okay, so there are some things I don’t like, but there are also some great songs. I love the way Copeland beats the crap out of the drums at the end of “Message in a Bottle”, he sounds like he’s trying to break the ride in half. “It’s Alright for You” has some of that first album energy. “Walking on the Moon” has such a minor and dour feeling that when the chorus comes in, it feels like sugar straight to the blood stream. “No Time This Time” sounds wonderfully simple… because it was a b-side from Outlandos d’Amour.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I picked on it, but it’s still good. It’s my least favorite of their albums, but it should be listened to.
