My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Original album is tracks 1-4
Brief Background: Movie (or alternately Movies based on the specific release you have) is the second solo album by Holger Czukay who is best known for his work with Can (Future Days and Tago Mago reviews). The album was released in 1979.
What I think: If you’ve followed me here, you know I’m not all that into the experimental music. Czukay here with Movies, like with his work in Can, is an exception. The album is only four tracks with two of them being ten plus minutes. The first “Cool in the Pool” is as close to a single as you are going to find. It has a real laid back pop disco vibe that is amusing, but not all that captivating. The highlights of the album come from the two longer tracks which have spoken vocal (assumed to be taken from different movies) parts over funk, disco and keyboard heavy Krautrock beats. It’s something that would be jarring under most circumstances, but is handled wonderfully by Czukay it a way that gives everything a laid back vibe. It feels like a direct influence on a song like “Frontier Psychologist” by The Avalanches and presumably01 other bands of that era that cut in random musical and lyrical samples to form their songs.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I’m glad I heard it, a rather enjoyable listen if I do say so myself.
