My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Heroes was recorded in Berlin during July and August of 1977. It was released in October of the same year. Heroes was Bowie’s second critically and commercially successful album of 1977.
What I think: Heroes is a very similar album to Low. They were both recorded in Berlin (although Low had some tracks recorded in France), and both have more traditional songs on the first side and mostly instrumental ambient tracks on the second. I think the results leave me with similar interests as well, with the traditional songs being more captivating to me. You have the title track “Heroes” of course, which would make me question the sanity of anyone who doesn’t think it’s a great song. Other than that, highlights are “Beauty and the Beast”, “Blackout” and my (other than “Heroes”) favorite “V-2 Schneider” which starts as a new wave soul song and then dissolves into industrial noise. And how about that cover? Does it get anymore pretentious than that? Yet it works, it’s one of my all time favorites.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Yea, Let’s keep it. I think it’s a testament to Bowie that I can absorb so many of his albums in such a short period and not become tired of him.
