My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Rattus Norvegicus is the debut album from British punk band The Stranglers. The album was recorded at the end of 1976/ beginning of 1977 and was released in April of ’77. The album went platinum in the UK.
What I think: I’m always open to hearing punk bands I wasn’t previously familiar with, but this one didn’t do much for me. The positives are the bass and guitar playing… standard punk stuff really(which means the bass playing is stellar). The keyboards are pretty cool, sometimes sounding New Wave-ish and other times having a real Doors'” jammy organ feel to them. The negatives though are really in the vocals, both the singing style and the banal lyrics (The song “Peaches” for example is about oogling girls on the beach). Brought together, they sound like demo recordings for a Cars album. They seem to be missing any spark or genius.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? May we please skip it… thanks!
