1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

634. África Brasil – Jorge Ben Jor

Brief Background: África Brasil was released by Jorge Ben Jor in 1976. The music combines Brazilian, African and American music.

What I think: I really love the sort of big beats that are in the first three and the last two tracks. They really come across like up tempo Reggae songs, although that simplifies things to music as there are so many musical elements here. I’d be surprised if some of them weren’t sampled over the years, although the Wikipedia page does not acknowledge any. I’m not a huge fan of Ben Jor’s vocals and I think that has more to do with being in Portuguese than the quality. And those songs in the middle? They are alright, they all really seem blend together for me though and don’t have that special something the others have.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Again, with this album I could take it or leave it. It is interesting though so I will let it slide.
