My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Original Album is tracks 1-6.
Brief Background: 2112 is the third album from Rush. It was recorded in February of 1976 and released in April of the same year. Side one of the album consists of a suite of songs, while side two consists of independent songs.
What I think: When I saw that this was my next album I really had an “Oh Jesus” feeling, as I do with most Prog Rock. I forgot that Rush can actually be enjoyable at times. I wouldn’t seek the album out to listen to, but a good chunk of the music is pretty good. The overture on side one kind of goes back and forth for me, but generally speaking The “Discovery” through the “Oracle” section (6:45-15:56) are very beautiful pieces of music. And again when you get to the individual songs on side two “A Passage to Bangkok” and “Lessons” are pretty good songs. I especially like the acoustic start to “Lessons”, and feel most connected to the music in spots like that.
What do I dislike about the rest of it? I just think it’s to shrill and bombastic, and falls into the usual Prog Rock trappings.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I could go either way with this one, but I’m going to say let’s keep it. There is a story that actually makes some sense and that is a lot for a concept album.
