My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Horses was recorded in 1975 at Electric Lady Studios in NYC and was produced by John Cale. The album is considered a milestone in the explosion of Punk Rock. It was released in December of 1975.
What I think: Well, here’s another album I have no excuse for not listening to before. Putting it on, it really struck me how much it has the CBGB/ New York sound. It’s like Television is her backing band during certain songs. I love that, and it works wonders for Smith’s vocals. I’m not usually a fan of spoken word/poetry over music, but she does it perfectly and makes it seamless.
I love how she makes the two cover songs her own by adding significant original material to a melody you are already familiar with especially on “Gloria”. The Them original is stunning, but she is able to take that even further by somehow being having more energy than is already in Morrison’s overflowing take. I believe my two favorite tracks on the album are “Free Money”, who’s narrator could have been onr of the other characters involved in Springsteens “Meeting Across the River”, as well as the track that follows it “Kimberly”. The music of the track is beautifully fragile and Smith’s singing echos that perfectly.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I certainly agree this should be here. What a year for music 1975 has been!
