My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Marcus Garvey is the third album by Reggae band Burning Spear. The album was recorded and released in 1975.
What I think: I really didn’t enjoy the last Reggae album for the project, Natty Dread from Bob Marley. I really felt like there wasn’t a lot of variation in the songs, especially in tempo. This album does a really good job bringing variety and that keeps the music interesting. Drawbacks of the album are really related to the technical aspects. The lyrics are somewhat muddy and low in the mix and the bass seems too high, drowning out much of the high end. Otherwise a nice album, full of political songs of which I am clueless to their meaning.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I do agree that this should be here. We know that, as great as he was, Marley isn’t the only Reggae musician and it’s nice to get some other picks.
