My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Court and Spark was recorded in 1973 and released January 1, 1974.
What I think: I feel about much of this album, very similar to what I felt about Blue. Joni’s voice is really amazing and the music is nice, but it feels as though it belongs a bit in the background. It just doesn’t do enough to hold my attention and that is the way it goes for most of the album, until you get towards the end and things pick up some. Oddly enough, that isn’t a good thing, because her sound does work best in a folk world. The later songs add some Funky guitar (“Raised on Robbery”) an almost smooth Reggae sound (“Trouble Child”), Jazz and humor (“Twisted”) and these sounds and Joni Mitchell don’t work at all for me.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I would pass on it, the album feels inferior to Blue.
