1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

685. Autobahn – Kraftwerk

Brief Background: Autobahn is the fourth album by Kraftwerk. It was recorded and released in 1974. The title track is the first Kraftwerk song to feature sung vocals.

What I think: I am really surprised by how much I love this album. It’s a bright happy beautiful thing in a place I expected dark, sinister and jarring music. The title track is where most of the magic is and I just love the wonderful New Wavey synths and drums that were way ahead of their time. At almost 23 minutes it does get a bit long, but for a 23 minutes song it’s not as drawn out as you would think. The rest of the album details a period of sunrise to sunset. Which is for the most part a bit too ambient for me. Although, after I learned of that concept the tracks are more entertaining and interesting. This is especially true for “Morgenspaziergang” (Morning Walk), which really captures the feeling of being out just after the sun rises.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? This certainly caught me off guard, I always expected Kraftwerk to be dark and almost industrial. As the list indicates, it’s an album you have to listen to.
