1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

687. Fulfillingness’ First Finale – Stevie Wonder

Brief Background: Fulfillingness’ First Finale was recorded in L.A. and N.Y.C. and released in July 1974. The album won the 1974 Grammy for album of the year plus two other vocal Grammys for “Boogie on Reggae Woman”.

What I think:  The Wikipedia article on the album describes some of the music on here as “sparse” or “understated”, but I would say it’s more sleepy and it seems to be on an every other track basis. So the while the odd numbered tracks had me wanted to nod off, the even ones brought some energy and charm. My favorites on the album are the spiritual and questioning “Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away” and “Boogie on Reggae Woman”.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? We’ve had a lot of Stevie recently and we’ll have more soon. Those are all deserved, this one though just doesn’t really do much for me and based on that it could be skipped.

Rating (Out of 5): 2.5
