My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Billion Dollar Babies was mostly recorded in Connecticut, NYC and London from August 1972 to January 1973. The album was released in February 1973.
What I think: This album starts off really strong with material similar to School’s Out in a very theatrical, campy glam rock way with “Hello Hooray”, “Raped and Freezin'” and “Elected” and then sort of spirals downward into cliche-worthy hard rock that just tries too be scary and creepy. This unfortunately has the effect of making the campy humor disappear. One concession I will give it is that being released 43 years ago, some of the horror may now seem tame when at that point it maybe did come across as really creepy and frightening.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I could have done with School’s Out as the only Cooper album, but I know a lot of people would disagree.
