Brief Background: Larks’ Tongues was recorded in early 1973 and released in March of the same year. The lineup for this album contrasts greatly with those of King Crimson’s previous albums.
What I think: I thought King Crimson’s first album was kind of fun, and so I was interested in hearing what they put together all these years later. Ultimately, I’m sort of apathetic about the results, but there are some interesting sounds on the album. There is odd percussion all over the place. At times it sounds as though someone is banging on a metal pole or other random objects. I really like that aspect of the songs. It brings about more of a jam band feel. The other really outstanding part is the electric guitar in both parts of the title song. There is an extremely metal sound to it that is only steps away from thrash metal and it creates a pretty cool contrast with the rest of the band. Really though, that’s all that is special about it.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I think it could have been skipped in favor of something else.
