1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

719. Aladdin Sane – David Bowie

Brief Background: Aladdin Sane was mostly recorded at Trident Studios in London in late 1972 and a early 1973, but “The Jean Genie” was recorded in New York in late 1972.

What I think: This album isn’t connecting with me as much as Ziggy Stardust did. Bowie’s lyrics and vocals are perfectly fine, but seem to buried in the instrumentation. Speaking of which the instrumentation isn’t as compelling other. The guitar from Ronson is still there, but I don’t enjoy the sound of it like I did on Ziggy, that glammy sound is mostly gone in favor of a full guitar sound. Other times, the music delves very close to the soft rock territory, like in the title track “Aladdin Sane”. In the end, it’s not a bad record, it is just not as good as Ziggy.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I personally think we could have skipped this one.
