1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

720. Bongo Rock – The Incredible Bongo Band

Original album is tracks 1-8. Track 1 and 2 were also interchanged on the original.

Brief Background: Bongo Rock was recorded in  Los Angeles in 1973, the project first started as an attempt to make filler for the soundtrack for the film The Thing With Two Heads.

What I think: I first heard of this album while reading “Love Goes to Buildings on Fire: Five Years in New York That Changed Music Forever” and I thought it was great. I just love instrumental stuff like this. It’s loose, fun and full of layers and that makes it perfect as the breaks for the multitudes of hip-hop artists who sampled it. It’s like Green Onions with bigger beats. My favorites are the real rave ups of “Bongolia”, “Last Bongo in Belguim” and “Bongo Rock ’73”.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s so much fun… and is one of those unique albums with a great story.
