1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

730. Pink Moon – Nick Drake

Brief Background: Pink Moon was recorded in two days at the end of October 1971 and released in February of 1972. Pink Moon is Drake’s final album as his mental health would deteriorate over the coming years, eventually succumbing to depression in 1974.

What I think: Drake’s previous albums, Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter were enjoyable to various degrees, but I never felt they grabbed me and kept me captivated. That has really changed upon hearing this album. It is just Drake and an acoustic guitar (with a little piano on the title track) and lasts only twenty eight minutes. I hear a lot of beauty in the songs, but others may hear sadness. But it is completely perfect and I just want to loop it over and over. I think I’ve found a new favorite. Give it a listen.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I agree it should be here. I don’t know if the vocal/guitar thing is for everyone, but I think everybody should give it a shot.

Rating (Out of 5): 5

I absolutely love Nick Drake and I’ve been hunting for someone like him who’s around now so I can actually go and see some live music. I read in Mojo magazine about James McArthur, they compared his stuff to Pink Moon so I downloaded the album and I love it, it’s mesmerising. The albums called Burnt Moth and I think its really Nick Drakey in parts with amazing guitar and lovely tranquil vocals it’s definitely worth checking out. https://jamesmcarthur.bandcamp.com/album/burnt-moth
