1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

733. American Gothic – David Ackles

Brief Background: American Gothic was recorded in London in 1972 and released on July 4 of the same year.

What I think: I would describe Ackles on this album as a mix between lounge-y Scott Walker ( Scott 2, Scott 4)and your standard Gordon Lightfoot. And as my appreciation is pretty limited for the former and somewhat mid-level for the latter, so goes my enjoyment of the who the song sounds like on the album. The Lightfoot like songs are often very wonderful. Check out “Love’s Enough”, “Oh, California”, “Another Friday Night” and “Midnight Carousel”. The rest can probably be skipped.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I think it would have made a great E.P., but I am glad I heard it as I was completely unfamiliar with this gentleman.

Rating (Out of 5): 2.5
