My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: The Slider was mostly recorded in March and April of 1972 in Paris. Other pieces of the album were done in London and Los Angeles. The album was the released in July of the same year.
What I think: When going from one album to the next, you sort of want to hear growth in a group. That certainly is not the case here. The songs on this and Electric Warrior could be, for the most part, interchanged and nobody would have thought any different. In fact, “Telegram Sam” is almost the same exact riff as “(Bang a Gong) Get it On”. These songs are maybe a bit catchier than the previous and in that lose some of the coolness of the predecessor.
And you know what? It doesn’t matter, this is still an amazing album. I just love almost everything I hear. The one exception to that would be “Buick Mackane”. The blues-metal riff in the front of everything just doesn’t do it for me. Check out the sequence of “Rock On”, “The Slider” and “Baby Boomerang”, it’ll put you in pop-glam heaven.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Another winner by T. Rex. What a back to back set of records!
