1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

752. Hunky Dory – David Bowie

Original album is tracks 1-10

Brief Background:Hunky Dory was recorded in the middle of 1971 and released in December of that year.

What I think: I’ve never really gotten past the singles as far as Bowie goes, and as far as the singles, this album has two of my favorites with “Changes” and “Life on Mars”. “Changes” has been a favorite since I was a kid. It’s just a classic song, and one of his best. “Life on Mars” is a more recent favorite and certainly more sinister sounding than “Changes”.

This album as a whole is really good though, I love the mix of Folk, Pop and Glam Rock in the mix. I was very surprised at the level of Folk sound as I thought that once Bowie moved away from it, he never went back. Favorites that I hadn’t heard before this listen are “Oh! You Pretty Things”, “Kooks”, and “Queen Bitch” (of which, I never realized The Killers lifted a couple of lines for “Mr. Brightside”).

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I agree this should be here. If nothing else, it has be interested in digging deeper into Bowie’s catalog.
