1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

759. Live With Ginger Baker – Fela Kuti

Original album consists of tracks 1-4

Brief Background: Live was recorded in early 1971 (location unstated) and released in August of the same year.

What I think: This is a really great album. Kuti’s vocals are impassioned and powerful. The band has a great Afrobeat led drum sound and the horns have this wonderful Memphis soul/funk sound and everything really comes together very nicely. “Let’s Start” is a great first track with  a lot of energy and is book-ended by the more subdued, but harder driven “Edge Mi O” complete with the crowed singing wonderful “la, la’s” throughout the track.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I am glad this is here. It is certainly nothing I’d ever listen to on my own and I’m really happy that I did.

Rating (Out of 5): 4.5
