My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Maggot Brain was recorded in late 1970 and early 1971. It was released in July of 1971.
What I think: This album is really an amazing piece of Funk/Rock/Soul hybrid. What you have are two really dark, apocalyptic epics to start and end the album. “Maggot Brain” is basically a ten minute guitar solo, on the other side “Wars of Armageddon” is a ten minute psychedelic mess. And these two tracks are pretty good, though the highlight comes from what is between those two tracks. These tracks are tight energetic pieces of music that cross a lot of boundaries and address many social issues. My favorites being “Can You Get to That”, “We are Back in Our Minds” and “Hit is and Quit it”. They all have a wonderful pop element along with being full of substance, to me that is the perfect song. Oh yea, and now we have a new leader for the creepiest album cover. Is she laughing? Screaming? both? It’s the stuff nightmares are made of.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I certainly do agree that this should be here. I never had an appreciation for Funk before starting this project, but it’s albums like this that have really changed that.
