My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Blue was recorded in 1971 and released in June of that same year. The songs on the album were written after Mitchell’s difficult break-up with James Taylor.
What I think: This album is a bit of a paradox for me, I would say that I love it, but with oddity that I don’t really love any of the individual songs (with one exception). It is more of a piece, a certain mood that is the genius in it. The title says it all, it’s sad and blue. It’s a great piece of background music for a rainy Sunday. Then again, relegating it to the background doesn’t do it justice. So just give this one a listen and see for yourself what I mean. It’s simple, melancholy and beautiful.
Oh, and that song that really stands out to me is “River”, which I first heard some years back on a radio station that was just playing Christmas songs. I thought it was a perfectly odd song to be playing next to the joyful standards and has been a favorite of mine (X-mas or not) ever since.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s really what albums were meant to be, a great piece of music that fits all together, each part as good as previous or next. Yes, it should be here.
