My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Histoire de Melody Nelson was recorded during the last half of 1970 and released in April of 1971. It is a Concept album sung in French by Gainsbourg.
What I think:
After initially listening to this album, I really didn’t like it. I mean the music was a little bit intriguing, but the spoken word French lyrics drove my nutty. Then I read the Wikipedia page about the album and learned what the concept was about and then… then I was completely disgusted. A concept album about seducing a teenage girl you accidentally hit with your car. Really? People are going to stand up and call this great? Hey guess what, lyrical content matters, it isn’t just about the music and the melodies.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I’m pretty sure they skipped Tupelo Honey in this book. Can we do that instead? It’s one of my favorites!
