1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

768. Untitled (IV) – Led Zeppelin

Brief Background: IV is Led Zeppelin’s unsurprisingly fourth album. It was recorded during the end of 1970 and through the first half of 1971 and was released in November of the same year with no writing at all on the outside of the album. This has helped spread the legend of the album over the years and has also been responsible for it being called by many names two of those include “IV” and “Zoso”.

What I think:

Finally a Led Zeppelin album I can get behind! I can attribute that to a few changes I have seen that have taken place here. The first is that instead of a distinct sound on the album (for example III was mostly an acoustic album), there are a lot of changes in tempo and instrumentation. That creates a really full sound and keeps things fresh. Second, there is a bit of a pop element added which make the songs a lot more accessible. “Misty Mountain Hop” and “Rock and Roll” are great examples of this, and while there isn’t a huge swing, it shows me that they were open to having some fun with the songs and that helps me not take things quite as seriously as well. It’s also pretty amazing that despite not hearing the album before, I still knew all of the songs except for “Four Sticks”. And I really like everything here to a certain extent.

“Stairway to Heaven”, being one of the most infamous rock songs of all times, is the one I would like to dismiss, but really I can’t. It really is a master piece in the way it builds and builds. First, with the tempo change in just the acoustic guitar, then the full band coming in and finally with the electric solo and Plant’s screaming vocals. It is the best of rock and roll and it is the cliche’s rock and roll legends are built on, it is rock and roll!

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to?  I agree that this should be here. It’s one of those surprises that keeps me doing this blog. This is a funny one as well, being one of the best selling albums of all time and I’m just now listening to it.

Today I started new position as an Academic Librarian at Normandale Community College. Half of my time will be spent on reference and the other half on classroom instruction. I'm very excited to utilize the skills I have, but more importantly learn a zillion new things about librarianship!
