My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Aqualung was recorded in London through the final month of 1970 and the first two of 1971. It was released in March of ’71. The album is thought my many to be a concept album, though the band denies the idea. Many of the songs deal with the themes of god and religion.
What I think:
Take one part The Incredible String Band and 1/2 part Led Zeppelin III. Mix it together well and then leave moldering in a corner for the next 45 years. Add the awful flute parts from the As it Happens theme song and you have Agualung. It’s not the worst I’ve heard, but if singer/guitarist/flautist Ian Anderson had put in some Deep Purple like wails it would have been no contest. Still it’s dense enough and self-serious enough that it may have inspired the entire concept of Spinal Tap.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? Ick, why do I feel like I’ve just cleaned a damp basement?
