1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

816. Bitches Brew – Miles Davis

Brief Background: Bitches Brew was recorded in August of 1969 and released in 1970. It is a continuation of Davis’ electric period which started with In a Silent Way.

What I think: As with In a Silent Way, I was able to understand this album much better than his previous records. There is a repeating rhythm that I’m able to follow in ways that I don’t recognize in those modal records. I didn’t like this one as much as the last though. I would say that Silent Way followed a rock and soul vibe where this almost has a blues vibe to it and some of the dislike even came down to the actual sound of the the guitar. The one track I did really enjoy was “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down” which, as the title suggests, has a real New Orleans jazz feel to it.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s an interesting album and is really polarizing among fans and critics. I think anything that brings out that much passion in people should be here.
