My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
On occasion I need a chronological break from the albums and that is the case here. This album was picked at random. The original consists of tracks 1-10.
Brief Background: Club Classics Vol. One was recorded throughout 1988 and 1989 getting a release in April of 1989. The group had a hit in the U.S. with “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)”, which is different than the accapella version of the song that appears on the album.
What I think: What we have here is a complete 180 from the albums I’ve been listening to that came out twenty years before it. It’s the standard late 80’s/ early 90’s dance music. This is something that I would never listen to one my own. It is too repetitive (it is dance music), the lyrics are banal, and the commands for me to “dance” throughout the album are the ultimate in cheesiness. In reality though it could have be worse. The hip-hop track “Feeling Free” was cool and had some great late 80’s beats and scratches and it was interesting to hear the accapella version of “Back to Life”.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I’m sure this was huge in the dance world, but I say scratch it for something that has aged better.
