My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Original Album is tracks 1-9.
Brief Background: Led Zeppelin II was record throughout 1969 at various locations in the UK and North America while the band was on tour.
What I think: It’s odd to be reviewing another Led Zeppelin album so soon after doing the first one. Everything I said about the first album is true with this sort of being an extension of what they started there. I do want to say that I could probably listen to isolated tracks of the rhythm section for hours on end. Jones and Bonham are amazing throughout. On the rest of the album though Page’s guitar riffs don’t do too much for me and Plant’s vocals seem to annoy more than illicit joy. There are a couple of exceptions, that make it impossible to hate on this album. Those two songs are “What Is and What Should Never Be” and “Ramble On”. They are just killer the whole way through and make we wonder, “Why do I like these songs and hate the others?”. They are both fast paced and have great hooks, but the other songs have some of that as well. It’s just hard to say what makes one song joyful and the other a nuisance.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I agree that it should be here, it’s a very influential album with a lot of fans. I’m just not one of them.
