1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

881. Lady Soul – Aretha Franklin

Brief Background: Lady Soul was recorded at Atlantic Studios in NYC throughout 1967 and was released in January of 1968.

What I think: I just love this album! It has everything a great soul record should have:

1. Amazing Vocals – Aretha’s voice is obviously outstanding! So much so that I can’t even help not singing along to “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Women”

2. The Backing Band – You can’t go wrong with the Muscle Shoals guys backing you up. I love that a little bit of funk is starting to seep into the music.

3. A Horn Section – Perfect amount of horns a well, just enough to be part of the music without overdoing it.

4. Wonderful Backing Vocals – This is something you don’t get with the Stax records and I like that, but here the backing vocals are like the horns, the perfect amount!

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? No doubt that this should be here. Great album from top to bottom!
