My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Original U.S. Album is tracks 1-11. For that album “Remember” and “Red House” (Tracks 16 and 17) were left off from the UK release.
Brief Background: Are You Experienced was recorded over sixteen recording sessions at three studios from October 1966 to April 1967. These sessions included the songs “Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe” and “The Wind Cries Mary” which were released as singles in the UK and left off of that release.
What I think: I’m not a huge Hendrix fan, but this is a really good listen. I really like the fact that for all of the layers and overdubbing the album has the songs are still really tight and relatively short. “The Wind Cries Mary” is my favorite Hendrix song, I like the softness of it which is a great contrast to the heavier stuff. “Purple Haze” is great for its initial impression of being a drug song, but is probably more about a relationship. And finally you have “Foxy Lady”, which will forever remind me of Wayne’s World.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I think it should be here, this was a very influential album and although not a particular favorite of mine there is still plenty for me to enjoy.
