My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: I’m a Lonesome Fugitive was recorded in late 1966 and released in 1967.
What I think: Haggard is one of my favorite country singers, his songs for the downtrodden screw ups will wear you out with their stories of difficult living. This album is no different. The highlight here is “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive”, but the other songs are also really great. It’s all here stories of prison, losing the girl, rowdy living, losing the girl, missing the girl and finally losing the girl. No stories about his dog though…. oh well. The one negative here is that many of the songs have a formulaic tempo which makes them mush together towards the end of the album.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? I do think it should be here, it’s refreshing to have a little change away from the acid rock abundance of 1967.
