My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background: Sunshine Superman was recorded during the first half of 1966 and was released in August of the same year. The album is notable as one of the first psychedelic albums to be released coming almost a year before many of its followers.
What I think: I’ve always really liked the song “Sunshine Superman” and so I was really excited to listen to this album. In the end it’s sort of a let down. There is just too much of the weird psychedelic stuff and along with the medieval lyrics it’s just too bloated for me. Stay away from “Legend of a Girl Child Linda”, “Three King Fishers” and “Guinevere”. Everything here isn’t a loss though as “Season of the Witch” is a great rocker and even “The Trip” with its description of an acid adventure is pretty good.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to?It is weird that this album is chronicled this late in the book, because a year after its release is sort of a different era of music. This was sort of a ground breaking record upon it’s release in 1966. Listed along with the releases of the next summer, it’s still a good album, but not nearly as innovative.
