1001 Albums You Must Hear (and Blog about) Before You Die

My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die

901. Surrealistic Pillow – Jefferson Airplane

Original album is tracks 1 – 11.

Brief Background: Surrealistic Pillow was recorded towards the end of 1966 and was released in 1967. The album’s most popular tracks (and Jefferson Airplane’s biggest hits), “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit” were brought over by Grace Slick from her previous band The Great Society.

What I think: Going into this album, I expected eleven tracks similar to the hard rock sound of “Somebody to Love” and the drenched in acid sounds of “White Rabbit”. In essence I was expecting an unintentionally funny acid rock album. What I got was completely different. The two previously mentioned tracks being the exception, this album is full of short and tight folk-rock tracks in the vein of Mamas and Papas or The Byrds. And what surprised me even more than the sound of the music was that the lyrics were pretty and heartfelt. My favorites here are “My Best Friend” and “Today”.

Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? This is a great album and I would put it up there with anything The Byrds have done, as my ultimate compliment I would say I would even put it on to listen to it again.
