My attempt to blog all of the entries from the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
Brief Background:The Psychedelic Sounds… was recorded throughout 1966 and was released in November of the same year. The album is believed to be the first to use the word psychedelic on the cover.
What I think: I’ve never been a fan of what I think of as psychedelic music, but coming into this time period I know that I have to listen with an open mind or this is going to be torture. I’m glad I took that approach with this album as it was, for the most part, really good. I didn’t like the super crazy tracks like “Roller Coaster” or “The Kingdom of Heaven”. I did really enjoy the rest though. The music is basically garage rock with some odd sounds (I believe the “bloop, bloop” sound on every track is the electric jug). The important thing is that they are still based in the idea of rock n’ roll and don’t askew hooks. My favorite track here is “Don’t Fall Down”, which has some cool vocal parts on it.
Do I agree or disagree with the writers as to this being an album you must listen to? It’s a good garage rock album and it’s bringing in a new era of rock, so I’ll let it pass.
